One of the best parts of cruising is waking up in a new destination and heading off the ship to explore. Whether you're relaxing on a beautiful Caribbean beach, taking a guided excursion, or exploring a local town, being prepared can make your port day much more enjoyable.

I've put together this simple port day bag checklist to help make sure you have everything you need before leaving the ship.

Essential Documents

Before stepping off the ship, make sure you have all the necessary documents with you.

  • Sail & Sign card (or your cruise card)

  • Passport or birth certificate and government-issued ID

  • Excursion tickets or confirmations

Your cruise card is especially important, as you'll need it to get back on the ship at the end of the day.

Money & Payment Methods

While many places accept credit cards, it's always a good idea to carry multiple forms of payment.

  • Wallet

  • Credit card

  • Cash

  • Small bills for tips

Cash can be helpful for taxis, local vendors, and tipping tour guides.

Electronics & Phone Accessories

Most travelers rely heavily on their phones while exploring ports, whether for photos, maps, or staying connected.

Don't forget:

  • Portable phone charger

  • Charging cable / box

  • Waterproof phone pouch

A dead phone battery can quickly become an inconvenience during a long day ashore.

Health & Safety Items

The Caribbean sun can be strong, and it's always better to be prepared.

Consider packing:

  • Sunscreen

  • Hand sanitizer

  • Any medications you may need

  • Small first-aid items

These items don't take up much space but can save you a lot of discomfort later.

Beach & Excursion Essentials

Depending on your plans, these items can make your day much more comfortable:

  • Swimsuit

  • Beach towel (if applicable)

  • Water bottle

  • Walking shoes or sandals

  • Sunglasses

  • Hat

Even if you're not heading to the beach, comfortable footwear is often one of the most important items for exploring a port.

Bring a Change of Clothes

Many cruisers overlook this one.

Packing a lightweight change of clothes can be helpful if you're spending the day at the beach or participating in water activities. I also recommend bringing a grocery bag or waterproof bag for wet clothes and towels before returning to the ship.

Final Thoughts

A little preparation goes a long way toward having a smooth and enjoyable port day. Before leaving the ship, take a few minutes to double-check your bag and make sure you have everything you'll need.
