Do I Need a Passport for my Cruise?
It depends on your cruise type! Here’s what you need to know:
Closed-Loop Cruises (Roundtrip from the U.S.)
If your cruise starts and ends at the same U.S. port (like Miami or Fort Lauderdale) and only visits Caribbean, Bermuda, Mexico, or Canada — you don’t need a passport!
You can sail with a government-issued photo ID and an original or certified copy of your birth certificate.
All Other Cruises
If your cruise starts or ends in a foreign port, or you plan to fly to or from the ship, you’ll need a valid U.S. passport book.
Travel Tip: Even if it’s not required, having a passport is highly recommended — it makes flying home in an emergency much easier.
** if you need to fly back to the U.S. from a foreign port or island, you must have a valid U.S. passport
My Recommendation: Get a passport for your cruise no matter the type; better to be safe than sorry, and now you have it for other vacations also!
